So maybe I'll post every 8 months in here.  Here's an encouraging article I came across as I continue my job search for when I finish school in May.  It's written by an NYU Stern professor.

Crisis for MBA Grads Seeking Jobs?

November 17th, 2008

This summer I wrote about what I saw as a particularly grim job market for the business school graduates of 2009 (see Job Market Update and Job Prospects for B-school Grads). Back then I wrote:

The students who will really, truly feel this recession are the graduates of 2009 (and maybe even the graduates of 2010). I expect the job market moving forward to be abysmal, and for the hiring season of 2008-2009 to largely be a bust.

There is now growing evidence that this is the case (see Crisis Hits the Business Schools). Alison Damast of BusinessWeek writes:

Second-year students…without job offers appear to be in the most precarious position. According to a survey by the umbrella group MBA Career Services Council, about 70% of the 77 schools surveyed said they saw a downturn in full-time recruiting opportunities in financial services in October. Meanwhile, about half of the schools said overall full-time job postings and on-campus recruiting this fall was either flat or down 5% during the same period, with some indicating it has fallen as much as 10%.

In the coming year, the job market for MBAs may begin to bear a striking similarity to the period following the dot-com bust when some banks and consulting firms rescinded or renegotiated job offers they had extended to second-year students. That hasn’t happened this time around—yet.

As bad as that may sound, I think that those are rosy numbers. The worst is yet to come, and this job market will turn out to be far worse than that of the dot-com bust. This economic recession is far deeper and more broad-based than that of 2001-2002. In fact, I have been hearing anecdotally from sources (both internal and external to my university) that while recruiters have continued to visit and interview, there are increasingly fewer and fewer offers.

So I still anticipate an extremely difficult year for MBA grads looking for jobs. And unfortunately, I have had to revise my estimates for the next academic year. It is starting to look like it will be worse for the class of 2010.

I sincerely hope I am wrong.

So I'm done with my first year of school...almost.  I still have a Real Estate take home final that involves many linked spreadsheets.  The midterm took me 16 hours but I actually enjoy this stuff.

Tomorrow I leave for Dubai on a school trip with the real estate folks.  We will be checking out all sorts of insane buildings and developments.  Check out these crazy links.

Some of the things we'll be doing in Dubai:

  • 1/2 day city tour
  • Desert Safari on 4 wheelers
  • Company visits
  • Visit Festival City
  • Possible World Islands visit
  • Visit Hotel Burj al Arab with free lunch in the restaurant
  • Visit Dubai Sports City
  • Play golf at the Ernie Els course there
  • Ski at the indoor ski facility

So 3 1/2 adventure packed days in Dubai and then it's off to Bodrum, Turkey.  This is supposed to be sort of the South Beach of Turkey.  People from Europe make vacation trips there.

  • More company visits
  • Yacht cruise with unlimited drinks = trouble for some of the boozers on my trip
  • Archaeological sites at Ephesus

After 3 1/2 days in Bodrum, off on a short flight to Istanbul for 4 more days

  • City tour
  • More company visits
  • Dinner cruise with local alumni

There are 7 of us that will be extending our stay in Istanbul for another 3 days.  One of our classmates is an international student from Turkey so he will be there at the same time to show us around.  I can't wait!  Time to pack.

no posts for months and now multiples!

for some reason, i laughed so hard at this picture that my face started hurting.  hot mustard, http://icanhascheezburger.com/ is so dumb that it's funny

So my pops just gave me a pocket A's schedule for the season starting in April.  I know the Dodgers did it last year but I see that the A's will now have all-you-can-eat for $35!  You have to sit in the 3rd deck right behind the plate.  Bleachers are $13 and behind the plate in the 2nd deck is $30 so it doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me.  I can't wait to stuff myself silly!!  If I eat 3 hot dogs, 2 nachos, popcorn, a couple sodas, a couple ice creams, some peanuts...

yup, definitely worth it!  I'll try to forget about how many years I'm cutting off of my life.
